Tunnel To Towers Run: My 1st 5K, Commemorating The 10th Anniversary of 9-11

Happy Tuesday! Remember how I promised to tell you what I did on the 10th anniversary of 9-11? Guess what? I participated in a 5K in Mobile - the "Tunnel To Towers" Run.  This race has been held annually in New York since the 1st anniversary of 9-11.  It pays tribute to all first responders and is named after NYC firefighter Stephen Siller. Siller was on his way home from an an overnight shift when he heard about the attack on the World Trade Center over his scanner. Stephen immediately turned around in his vehicle and headed towards the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to head to WTC. Upon finding out that traffic had the tunnel blocked, this brave man abandoned his car and ran through the tunnel with 75 pounds of gear on his back...nothing would stop him from helping the citizens and his fellow firefighters. Stephen was picked up by a fire crew and transported to West Street and Liberty, near Ground Zero. He was never seen again.  On this, the 10th anniversary of 9-11, th...

Ten Years Later, We Remember

Image
Today marks the ten year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The attacks changed our lives forever. It doesn't matter where you were or what you were doing the moment you heard the news - you remember. Chances are great that someone you know and love was affected.  This has always been a tough, very sad day for me.  It highlights our vulnerability. Before 9/11/01, we thought we were invincible. These kinds of things happened in other places, and mostly in countries that are far, far away. Never did I think I would live to see something of this magnitude occur on our soil, here in the United States of America.  Today, please join me in honoring those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Say a little prayer for their families and friends. Honor the first responders - many of whom paid the ultimate price. Hug a policeman, fireman or member of our military and tell them "thank you". Remember the many members of the US Armed Services, who ...

September 11, 2001 - Have You Forgotten?

Image
Happy Saturday, Shopaholics! I'm off to the Alabama vs. Penn State game in Tuscaloosa today, which is going to be fun, fun and more fun....but it just didn't feel right not to discuss the 9th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on our nation. Have you forgotten? Have the memories dulled? In my opinion, this was the Pearl Harbor of MY generation. We were confused; under attack and didn't even realize it. I haven't talked to one person who doesn't remember where they were - and what they were doing - when they received the news of the first plane crashing into the north tower of the World Trade Center. I always believed someone upstairs was looking out for me. I just happened to be at the beach, on a week's vacation when my Mother called us with the news of the attacks. I'm only slightly embarrased to tell you DH and I were still sleeping when the first plane hit.  During that time period, I had a job where I traveled every single week. Left on Monda...
