I Promise, I Am Alive!

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I updated the blog! The holiday season has been exceptionally busy this year with my crazy schedule. For those who are still reading, no worries - I will be back "full speed ahead" in January! Until then, I hope you are enjoying a beautiful holiday season with family and friends!

Neiman Marcus+ Target Designer Collaboration

Unless you were in hiding this past weekend, you know two things. #1 - Alabama won the SEC championship and is playing Notre Dame for the BCS National championship in January, and #2 - the Neiman Marcus + Target collection launched in stores and online on Saturday.

The collection features 24 of America's most popular designers, all members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). In recognition of these designers and their contribution to the collection, Neiman Marcus and Target donated a total of $1 million to the CFDA.

I will admit to staying up a little bit late (early!) to hit the websites as soon as the collection was available. So far, I have purchased the Tory Burch Lunch Box for $19.99 and Printed Beverage Container for $19.99. (both are available on Neiman Marcus website HERE). Stylish options for taking one's lunch to work, right? A fan on Facebook indicated she purchased five of these, and was planning to give them to her daughter to use as gift for her sorority sisters. She mentioned using the Lunch Box as a cosmetics case. Brilliant - I didn't even think of that!

On Saturday, I didn't get over to my local Target as we were all absorbed with game day activities. (Did I mention that already? We're very happy Alabama fans!) Anyway, Sunday I made it to Target (sadly, no Neiman's within more miles than I care to count) and was able to see the entire collection in person. Some of my favorites included the following.
The Joseph Altuzarra cocktail shaker and old fashioned highball glasses are beautiful. They are heavy weight, and would make an amazing gift for the friend who has everything. I am considering investing in these for our wet bar area. We already have multiple cocktail shakers and more glasses than I can count, but I'm in love with this set. The shaker is $49.99 and the set of four glasses is also $49.99. (both are available on Neiman Marcus website HERE).
The Carolina Herrera set of three Cosmetic Bags is so much fun! These are perfect for travel, and the smallest one is a great size to use in your everyday handbag. The fabric is a cotton blend and one of the prints is elephants. Priced at only $39.99, I'm going to request these from Santa! (also available on Neiman Marcus website HERE).
The Lela Rose Lace top is also a winner, although I was a little disappointed the lace is only on the front. The top is plain on the back. What a beautiful top for a holiday party, this would also look very pretty worn casual with skinny jeans and heels. No matter how you wear it, $69.99 for Lela Rose is an amazing deal! (also available on Neiman Marcus website HERE).

There are so many other items I love - the DVF jewelry box and yoga mat, the Judith Leiber jeweled compact mirrors, and the Oscar de la Renta Canvas tote bag to name a few! If you are planning to purchase from this collection, and your store is out of stock, know that most items are still available online. You can order from the Neiman's or Target websites. Neiman's has free shipping with code "NMFALL" at any price, Target has free shipping with a $50 purchase. Both stores participate in the Ebates Cash Back program - you earn 4% Cash Back at Neiman Marcus online and 2% Cash Back at Target online. If you're not yet an Ebates member, you should consider joining. It's free and easy - I've earned over $400 for my online shopping since joining! Join free with my link HERE and start getting that cash back!

Have you shopped the Neiman Marcus + Target collaboration yet? What are your favorite or "must have" items?

Thanksgiving Blessings

Today we give thanks. Thanks for our family, thanks for our friends, thanks for our freedom. Thanks for our many blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I hope your blessings are many.

p.s. Who else thinks it's tacky that many retailers are opening late on Thanksgiving night? Shouldn't this day be reserved for family activities and not having to worry about going to work? Ugh...

Atlanta Adventures, Part One: Georgia Aquarium

For the past few years, every time DH and I have traveled to Atlanta, it has been either a work trip or a trip focused around a sporting event. We have long wanted to plan a trip up to see the Georgia Aquarium, and do a little shopping. This past weekend was a perfect time, as we both ended up with Friday, Saturday and Sunday off work.  It’s rare for us to both be off at the same time with the DH in town – so we snatched up our opportunity and headed out on Friday afternoon.

We really wanted to stay at the W Hotel in Buckhead, but since this was a last minute trip, it was booked solid. Our second choice was the Westin in Buckhead, but it was also booked. We ended up at the Embassy Suites in Buckhead, which is a great hotel and a nice central location. I loved being within a mile of the MARTA station, and great shopping at both Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza!

On Saturday, we took MARTA to downtown and went to the Georgia Aquarium. Being lovers of all things sea-themed and beach-related, this was a perfect destination for us. It’s one of those places we’ve wanted to see for years, and had never made the time. WOW is all I can say – I’m so glad we finally went.

The Georgia Aquarium is amazing. There are so many things to see – the beluga whales, the whale sharks, albino alligators, the penguins, the coral, the sea otters…I could go on but you get the point. Of course, I was most impressed with the huge whale sharks and the beluga whales. We also took in the dolphin show, which only lasted about 30 minutes but it was fantastic. The dolphins just make you smile - letting the trainers ride them, waiving to the crowd, jumping in the air, kissing the trainers. I was trying to think about the last time I personally saw a dolphin show…I’m pretty sure it was at Sea World in Tampa when I was a child. That’s been a long time! (Note – unless you want to get wet, sit at least 10 rows up from the show – we were about halfway up and it was perfect – no water touched my hair)!

Of course we dressed for the occasion – I wore my Lilly Pulitzer Westerly Dress in the Touchy Feely print, and DH wore his Lilly Pulitzer Jett Half-Zip in Shorely Blue. I got so many compliments on my dress at the aquarium – people were saying “Oh, what a perfect dress to wear here”! You’ll notice there are no pictures of us together, and no full body shots of either of us. It was so crowded – I suppose because it was a Saturday – that taking pictures was somewhat of a challenge.  (More advice: if you’re going without children, try to visit the aquarium on a weekday).

After the aquarium, we walked next door to Legal Seafoods in downtown Atlanta. I should stop here to say, I know some people don’t like Legal Seafoods because it’s a chain restaurant. However, we love it. It’s so different from our seafood restaurants on the Gulf Coast, so it’s a nice treat for us.

I enjoyed a Legal Sangria, and the DH had a Blue Moon. (Well, maybe we had two of those – after all, we weren’t driving).  We also had delicious Lobster Rolls – another treat you don’t find on the Gulf Coast.  One of my high school girlfriends picked us up, and drove us back to the hotel. This was a blessing because I really don’t like riding MARTA – it just takes so long to get anywhere. Ugh. We were planning to call a cab but Wendy really wanted to see us, even if just for a few minutes. Wasn’t that nice of her? She saved us a cab ride and probably a $40-50 fare, so we paid her in Clam Chowder from Legal Seafoods. Fair trade, huh? Plus I got to see my friend, which was an added bonus to the trip!

In the next episode of Atlanta Adventures, we’ll talk about the shopping. I left town thinking “Why don’t we come up here more often”!?!?!?

Have you been to the Georgia Aquarium?

My 42 Year Old Face: Rodan + Fields Anti-Age Regime

Did you know? I am proud to be an Independent Consultant for Rodan + Fields. I have been using their products for over 90 days, and I can honestly tell you – my skin hasn't looked this good in at least 10 years, maybe even longer.

I started out using the Anti-Age Regime (available HERE), and quickly noticed results. Within a few days, my skin felt so much better and had an incredible texture. I might be 42 years old, but I have no desire to look 42 years old! The Anti-Age Regime has really helped my skin in a short period of time. My visible pores have been significantly reduced, which is a huge deal to me as I did not like the way my pores had been looking. It’s no wonder they call the Anti-Aging Pore Minimizing Toner “Spanx for Pores”!

Another one of my favorite products is the Anti-Age Multi Function Eye Cream (available HERE). Now I will admit – I have always been a fanatic about using a good eye cream. I started using eye cream when I was a teenager and never looked back. Before I started using the R+F eye cream, I felt like my previous eye cream was no longer yielding the same results. I knew I needed to switch it up to achieve a higher level of results. This eye cream has my eyes looking soooo much better. People are always commenting to me that I don’t look 42 years old – and let’s face it, that is my primary objective.

For those who don’t know much about Rodan + Fields, this company is the brainchild of world renowned dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. If they sound familiar to you, it’s probably because they were the dermatological dream team that originally created Proactiv Solution. They sold Proactiv many years ago, and began working on their new line, Rodan + Fields. With the highest concentration of anti-aging ingredients and peptides available on the market without a prescription, it’s no wonder these products work so well.

Rodan + Fields have a skin solution no matter your skin issue – aging, sun damage, acne or sensitivity. Our products are sold in kits (called “regimes”) or individually. You definitely experience the best results with a full skin care regime; because the products are all formulated to work together in the right order to give optimal results. If you’re interested in seeing what the doctors would recommend for your skin, you can try the solution tool on my website HERE. After answering a few short questions, you’ll see what regime would help you experience your best skin!

People asked me when I first started Rodan + Fields, how did I know the products would work for me? My answer is that I had always heard great things about their skincare, and was ready to make a change and try something new. But here is what really sold me: they have a 60-day, money back, no questions asked guarantee. Even if the bottle is empty! And guess what the return rate is? Less than one half of one percent! I think that is amazing – and it proved to me that the products worked. So I took the plunge, and originally signed up as a Preferred Customer.

The Preferred Customer (PC Perks) program gives you a 10% discount on all your products, and free shipping on all regularly scheduled orders. You can see all the details about the PC Perks program on my website HERE. As a virtual patient of Drs. Rodan + Fields, Preferred Customers have other perks – such as free access to our staff of nurses for any questions regarding the products. There is also a Preferred Customer hotline for order questions and ease of ordering (in addition to online ordering).

I can’t say enough good things about their products and their service. If you are looking to make a change in your skin care regime, if what you’ve been using isn’t working quite the same, or if you need to get started on a skin care routine – please consider Rodan + Fields. I won’t allow any other products to touch this 42-year old face!  ;-)

Feel free to email me with any questions or comment if you’d like any additional information. If you get started now, you can begin seeing some results in time for the holidays! HERE is a link to the website.

Cheers to great skin!

Help Me Select My Louis Vuitton

It only took me living to be 42 years old, but I have finally managed to talk the DH into a Louis Vuitton. He has always been great about buying designer bags as a gift for me. The first gift he ever gave me when we were dating was a matching Dooney & Burke handbag, wallet and key fob. (Don't judge the Dooney, the year was 1992). Over the years, we moved into Coach, Kate Spade, Burberry, etc - but I've never been able to talk him into a Louis Vuitton.

This is the year I will own that Louis Vuitton! How sad is it that I will have to travel to Atlanta or Jacksonville to buy this bag in person? Now THAT is a disadvantage of not living in a major metropolitan area (see, sometimes I do miss Charlotte). But hey, I'm thrilled to have a short weekend getaway with the DH and come home with a new LV.

So now I need your help, as I'm really confused about which bag I want to purchase. I tend to carry large handbags, I'm not a small person and look strange carrying a small bag. I also tend to favor bags with shoulder straps, but have several that I love without shoulder straps. And of course the larger the bag, the more I will carry in it, and the heavier it will get.

My top three choices are:

Speedy with shoulder strap
Galliera
Neverfull

What is your favorite style Louis Vuitton? Do you have any recommendations? I plan to get the Monogram Canvas print (as pictured), no matter which style I select. I can't wait to hear what you think!

Have a great day!

Special Thank You To All Who Served

Happy Veteran's Day! Today we pay tribute to all who served in our military. The sacrifices many have made over the years have gone unnoticed. In today's climate of 24/7 news, we know much about what goes on and our military is largely respected, honored and appreciated.

It's difficult for those my age and younger to understand, because we didn't live through those times - but there was a time when that wasn't the case in our great country. I think specifically of the Vietnam War and the lack of support for the war. Over the years, I have heard horror stories about how our troops were treated - not just abroad, but when they returned home from war.

There are many veterans in my family - my grandfather, four of my uncles, my Father in Law, and two of my cousins. All of the branches with the exception of the Coast Guard are represented - Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

Of all my family members who have served, one of my uncles suffered significant injuries in Vietnam. These are his words:

"I served as one of an eight man squad on permanent jungle patrol, focusing on long range reconnaissance working the Vietnam-Cambodian border. This area was used by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the VietCong (VC) for sanctuary. Our primary goal was to root them out, and the troops who were defending them.
On the morning of May 19, 1970, my squad and I walked into an ambush. They cut us down. Two of my squad members were dead, and two were severely wounded, including myself. The other four squad members were walking wounded. That was the end of my combat career.
I was sent by chopper medivac to the hospital in Vietnam for 10 days, then I was transferred to a hospital in Tokyo, Japan. I spent approximately 52 days in bed as a result of my injuries.
Upon my return to the United States, I spent the rest of my military career as a Training NCO. I served four more years Inactive Reserve and later received an Honorable Discharge".

Here's what my uncle doesn't really tell you. He was severely injured, he lost a kidney. He had over 50 bullet holes in his legs. Occasionally he will tell me the story of one of his squad members giving him a cigarette while he laid there waiting on the chopper, knowing he was bleeding to death and would probably die on that field in Vietnam. He earned a Purple Heart for his sacrifice and service, and it was stolen from him in that hospital in Vietnam.

Our family didn't know much about his injuries for quite some time. Again, you have to remember the times - it was May 1970. It was weeks before they even knew he was injured, and my Meme certainly had no idea of the extend of his injuries, or she certainly would have had a heart attack. When the family finally knew of my uncle's injuries and their extent, he was beginning to get better and it wasn't long before he was able to get home on leave.

THESE are the sacrifices that we have to be sure are never forgotten. Today, I would like to thank all of our veterans for their service to our country. Thank you, Uncle Ronald for your sacrifice on that field in Vietnam. You are the example to which our young men and women should aspire.

Please thank a Veteran today.

Lilly Pulitzer Fall, Part Two...

Who remembers my blog post about the Fall 2012 Lilly Pulitzer collection, and how fall was always one of my least favorite seasons? I'm hoping you forgot that I said I was DONE buying Lilly Pulitzer Fall, because guess what?!!?! Epic fail, as last week I caved and bought several new pieces! (Evidence of my September post HERE).

As always, there's a sale to blame. It's really not my fault. I have to look put together at work, and my office is pretty conservative. And besides, my employer is a financial institution. As you can imagine, I'm usually one of the most colorful peeps in the building!

My friend Sarah over at Village Palm (website HERE, Facebook page HERE) had lots of the Fall delivery on sale, so I picked up a few additional pieces. Here are some of them:

Callie Wedges, $228. Of course I realize this shoe doesn't scream "Fall" to many of you - especially if you're in an area that gets really cold. Luckily, we don't receive a ton of cold weather, so these are good for another 2 months or so. I am absolutely in LOVE with these shoes, and they are really comfortable. I found them to fit true to size.
Evie Dress in Cameo White Unbuttoned, $178. When I was in Dallas at the Lilly corporate store, I tried on an Evie Dress but didn't buy one. Naturally I regretted my decision, but still didn't want to spring for one at full price. When I found out it was on sale, I jumped on the Evie in the Unbuttoned print. The print is really cute in person, and I plan to top this with a blue cardigan for work.
Rebecca Sweater in Bomber Blue Snail Stripe, $138. Last Fall, I purchased a Rebecca sweater in Black and have really enjoyed it. The sweater is fairly lightweight, another piece that is perfect for our climate. It has 3/4 sleeves and an exposed back zipper. Now I only have one problem - what am I going to wear on the bottom? I'm not one to wear brightly colored jeans (of course, I know they're a trend, but I think I look super fat in them). Suggestions please?
Sadie Belt in Navy, $48. These wide belts go with almost every outfit, and the Sadie is a stretch polyester. I tried this belt several months ago while shopping at Dillard's in Pensacola, but didn't want to buy it at full price. I was thrilled to get one on sale, and can't wait to start pairing it with my Fall wardrobe!
In closing, this time I won't even say I'm not going to buy any more Lilly Fall. Because now all the stores are marking it down, and so much of it is truly work appropriate. That combination is very dangerous to my wallet!

If you're looking for any Lilly Pulitzer Fall pieces on sale, I recommend you call or email Village Palm and see if they can help. Sarah and her staff are super sweet and helpful, and you know you're supporting a small, female owned business. You can reach them at: 313-882-7256 or villagepalm@yahoo.com. Don't forget the links at the top of this post to their FB page and website. Be sure to tell them, Shopaholic In Alabama sent you!

Have a great Thursday!
