Thirsty Thursday: 4th of July Cocktail Recipe

Happy Thursday! One day closer to the long 4th of July holiday weekend!

Last night I was all over the internet, looking for recipes for new and interesting 4th of July fare. Lucky me, I found this "Fourth of July Cocktail" recipe on the Food Network website (link HERE). Now I'm dying to try it, perhaps a trip to the ABC store is a requisite stop today! :-)

  • 1 ounce watermelon schnapps
  • 1 big splash cranberry juice
  • 1 very thin slice jalapeno or serrano pepper
  • 1 slice lemon
  • 1 slice lime
  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/4 ounce blue curacao
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • Watermelon wedge, for garnish (optional)

Mix the schnapps and cranberry juice in a shaker; pour into an ice-filled glass.
Muddle the jalapeno pepper, lemon and lime slices, tequila, blue curacao and simple syrup (to make a batch, dissolve sugar in equal parts hot water and chill) in the shaker. Slowly strain into the glass over the red layer. Garnish with watermelon, if desired.

Do you have any favorite drink recipes for 4th of July? What do you think about the slice of pepper in this one? Hmmm.....interesting!
Hope your day is fantastic!

Wish List Wednesday: 4th of July Edition

Hello, Shopaholics! Welcome to Wish List Wednesday, the 4th of July edition!

Many of us have gatherings, parties, BBQ's - or maybe just a day at the beach planned for 4th of July. Our annual celebration includes: sit on the beach all day, come inside for dinner, then walk right back across the street for the fireworks display. In all likelihood, I will have on a swimsuit and coverup from 10am - 10pm. Wish I could tell you it's more exciting than that, but honestly - that's just how we roll around here. :-) Now - if I were to actually go somewhere else, my ensemble would include the following...

Lilly Pulitzer Roslyn Skirt, Cherry Bomb (available on

Lilly Pulitzer Wynne Top, White, imagine without the green shorts! (available on

Kenneth Jay Lane Caribbean Coral Cuff, in Red (available on

Jack Rogers Sandals, Navy with Red Trim (available on

How will you spend the 4th of July - and more importantly, what will you be wearing? How do you like my selections?

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Thank Goodness It's Monday...Seriously!

Good Morning, Shopaholics! Welcome to Monday! Never thought I'd be so happy to see the beginning of a new week!

You guys remember that the DH is traveling a lot now, right? Well he has been gone for almost two weeks now. The first week was actually ok - I had lots of projects, etc keeping me busy and the time flew by. Last week though...that was a different story.

If it were possible for something to break, screw up, or for me to just need someone to talk to - it all happened last week. I was beginning to feel like the universe had it out for me.

Last Tuesday, the car would.not.start. Naturally, the DH is in our second car (my backup), so I was stuck. Thank goodness my sister and her boys came down to help me. Of course it happened on a day when I had a ton of errands to run and lots of business to handle so I was really in a bind.

A few days before the car episode, my laptop died. My entire life is on that machine. So many photos, documents, etc that I get dizzy thinking about it. I had to work from a dinosaur desktop computer for several days, until I could get over to Mobile (the closest Best Buy is one hour away) and buy a new laptop. I still have to take the old laptop and the new laptop to my computer guru to see what information he can actually recover. That should be lots of fun.

Two other absolutely awful things happened, that involve friends of mine, but are just too personal to blog about. But let's just say I have been extremely troubled by this series of events for well over a week. Without the DH around to talk things over, it's been very rough.

I've been so out of sorts, that I haven't exercised in over a week. Ask me how I feel right now. "Crappy" pretty much sums it up. Back on the wagon today, as I need the stress reduction and I already feel bloated again. All that after eight days. Imagine. I bet I gained 2-3 pounds this week, but I will never know for sure because I don't have the guts to get on the scales.

So if you are dreading today, because it's a Monday after all, just think "it can always be worse". I, for one, am happy to close the book on last week and start over.

The DH is *hopefully* returning home on Thursday or Friday for a long 4th of July weekend! I sure hope so! If he doesn't, I'll be talking to myself soon...

Have a Marvelous Monday!

Salt Water Saturday: Deep Sea Fishing

Happy Saturday, Shopaholics! Hope your week has been better than mine! Sorry about being absent for the past week - my laptop died and I have been working from a dinosaur desktop computer. It's been a form of torture.

I wanted to blog and show you guys these pictures last week for my Salt Water Saturday post - but I wasn't sure I'd be able to recover the photos. Thankfully --- this series of photos were intact.

There is absolutely nothing like leaving the dock before daylight, and already being on a fishing spot when the sun rises over the Gulf of Mexico...

We had a very successful day of red snapper fishing. The new limits in our area are two fish per person, per day. I was fishing with the DH and my Father - and we had our six fish by 9am.

Dad caught a nice King Mackerel - however, it was catch and release on that baby because we don't eat them. Our rule: if you don't eat the fish, or we're not fishing in a tournament, we let them live. Then they can grow and be caught another day. :-)

In case you're wondering, we were fishing off a gas rig in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 35 miles off shore. Although much smaller, the rig is very similar to the one that exploded, sunk and caused the BP oil spill. Fishing out here can be a little dangerous - there are crew boats coming and going, helicopters coming and going, and other boats fishing everywhere. I took this shot from my view at the steering wheel to illustrate! It can be really crazy out there - you must have your head screwed on straight and pay attention at all times!

Pink fishing lure used to catch that King Mackerel...

Back at the dock when our fishing trip was over, here are the fruits of our labor. We cleaned all the snapper, and had enough for a huge fish fry on Father's Day!

And for the record, I caught the largest red snapper of the day. Score!

Have a Super Saturday! What are you up to this weekend? Today I am hanging at home, not feeling very well and getting ready for company tomorrow. Make it a great one!

p.s. Lilly Pulitzer Home is on Rue La La tomorrow (yes, on a Sunday!). If you're not a member, be sure to sign up HERE. Then you'll be ready for the sale when it begins! The preview shows items from Lifeguard Press - market totes, thermal and coffee mugs, stationery, etc. I'm hoping for some wonderful bargains! :-)

Fearless Fitness Friday: Mixing Up Your Routine

TGIF, Shopaholics! Welcome to another edition of Fearless Fitness Friday!

One thing I have learned about working out and trying to get into shape: it is very important to "Mix It Up". If I don't mix up my routines and take new classes, etc - I get bored very quickly. When possible, it's best to keep the exercise fun. It makes the time go by faster, and the overall effort seem less painful.

Friends have commented that I sure am working out a lot. I'm trying to get in 4 classes or workouts every week, and some weeks I have managed to make that 5. Ideally I would love to work out 5-6 days a week, and feel this is reasonable considering I don't have a "real job".

Some of the classes I am taking at the local YMCA include: Hi/Lo Combo Aerobics, Tone To Stone (mainly a toning class with a little cardio), Kickboxing, Cardio Blast (different cardio stations and toning) and Pilates. On the days I don't attend a class at the Y, I am walking/running 4 miles. The 4 miles is actually pretty easy for me now - although I'm trying to run more of the distance.

When I first started my workout program, I could only run maybe 10% of the time. Now I'm up to around 30%. I'd love to be able to run at least 50% of the workout, but I'm having a difficult time conditioning myself to run that much. I'm not sure if it's my breathing or what - I will sometimes feel like I can't breathe any more unless I stop running and start walking instead. Note I don't have any asthma or known breathing issues, so I know that isn't the problem. Maybe I'm just that out of shape still - who knows! But one thing is for sure - I'm going to keep trying.

Next week I plan to try a Zumba class, Yoga and continue working on increasing my running % on the 4-mile trek. This is a long process and I know it will take a while to figure out what works best for me, and helps me achieve my fitness goals.

I have no idea how much weight I've lost. Unfortunately I did not weigh when I started the plan, because I was so discouraged and disgusted that I didn't even WANT to know that number. Really I prefer to judge my progress based on how my clothes fit.

The good news in all of this? I've worn 3 pieces of Lilly in the past week, that were too tight and I wouldn't have been seen in out of the house six weeks ago. That is something to celebrate, although there is still a long way to go.

Are you also working on losing weight and getting into shape? How's it going? What is your favorite form of exercise?

Have a Fantastic Friday!

Facebook: The Dreaded "Unfriend"

facebook logo Pictures, Images and Photos

Happy Thursday, Shopaholics! It seems this week has flown by, I can't believe it's almost time for the weekend! Yeah! :-)

Are you on Facebook? Silly question - of course you are! These days it's easier than ever to connect with family, old friends, new friends, current and potential customers, etc via Facebook. Where else can you keep up with friends you haven't seen in 20 years, have your Auntie hit you on the chat, and sell a piece of Lilly - all at the same time? Yep - that's Facebook.

Everyone manages their Facebook account differently, and in a manner which is comfortable to them. For me personally, I accept almost every friend request that comes my way. Unless I've been told by a trustworthy friend that someone is a total psycho or potential child molester (don't laugh - I've heard both of those stories) - I generally accept the friend request. As a result, I've reconnected with friends I haven't seen or talked with since as far back as elementary school. When you stop and think about it - the "reach" of Facebook is unlike anything ever created.

And even though I mostly accept all friend requests, there is one thing I never do: The Dreaded "Unfriend". You know - it just seems a little rude to me. If you didn't want to be friends with that person in the first place - why did you accept the friend request? Why hurt someones feelings if you don't have to? Disclaimer: if the person is harassing you, then by all means, unfriend and do it quickly. If that's not the case, you can always just hide them. I've only had to "block" one person, as she was harassing me and wants to see me die a slow death by lethal injection - that's a whole nother topic.

Imagine my surprise a few nights ago to discover - purely by accident - that I had been "unfriended". And not just by anyone - but by a fellow blogger. I should say here that I have 1100+ Facebook friends, and my newsfeed is generally clogged with all kinds of stuff. It takes a lot for me to discover I've been unfriended. The only reason I noticed? She had commented on something a mutual friend posted, and I thought to myself "Hey - I haven't seen her on my newsfeed in quite some time" so I clicked her name. When I noticed "Add As Friend" - knowing we were previously Facebook friends - I thought "whoa - she unfriended me".

I have to admit - my feelings were a little hurt. It appeared she kept a ton of our mutual friends (mostly other bloggers) on her personal friend list. Silly me - I thought this blogging community was pretty tight-knit and close. I thought we all stuck together and took up for one another. Apparently, that's not the case in every situation and with every blogger! And even in this community, there are cliques. Believe it.

You might be wondering why this blogger unfriended me. That makes two of us! Maybe we didn't have enough direct communication. Maybe she didn't think I was good enough to be in her inner circle - I really don't know.

To quote Oprah - this is "What I Know For Sure". While my little blog here may not be all about high society, royal weddings, boarding school, and interior design - what I do write about on Shopaholic In Alabama is ME. My life. My reality. I'm not trying to present myself to you as something I'm not.

I'm a Shopaholic. I live on the Alabama Gulf Coast.  I buy a ton of Lilly. I am happily married to my prince. I love college football. I am learning to like working out. I love to play in makeup and hair products, and visit the salon as often as possible. My priorities include my family, friends, life here on the coast and maintaining my health. I enjoy the beach, salt water fishing, cooking, reading and selling designer clothing and accessories online. What you see here on Shopaholic In Alabama - that's me. Period.

And about that Royal Wedding....of course I watched the Royal Wedding and appreciate it's historical value. I just thought it would be in poor taste for me personally to blog about it at a time when tornadoes were tearing up cities like Tuscaloosa and Birmingham that friends and family call "home". It seemed more appropriate to discuss my feelings, offer my support, and then blog about a special shopping event held by an Alabama based Lilly store to raise money for tornado victims.

Have you unfriended anyone on Facebook? If so - did you have a conversation first or just hit the button and *poof* they were gone? Have your feelings been hurt by the dreaded "unfriend"? Don't worry - now my feelings aren't hurt and I'm over it. It's their loss, not mine.

Have a great Thursday - I plan to enjoy a leisurely lunch with a friend I haven't seen in months, doing a little Father's Day shopping, and then off to the YMCA for exercise class. Tomorrow is Friday!

Taking The Moroccanoil Plunge!

Happy Tuesday!

Shopaholic Confession: I finally broke down and bought some Moroccanoil. I have been hearing folks rave about this stuff for a few years - and decided now is the time to take the plunge! With summer upon us, my hair is experiencing a lot of abuse.

Isn't it bad enough that we color, blow dry, flat iron, use a curling iron, etc every few days? Then summer arrives and we sunbathe, swim in a pool and the Gulf of Mexico, exercise outside in 90-100 degree heat, wear a ton of ponytails and headbands. Not to mention washing the hair more than normal because it's so darn hot!

Enter what I am hoping will be a miracle product - the Moroccanoil Light Oil Treatment. Instructions say to use a small amount on damp hair, then style as usual. For me this means use a significant amount on damp hair, as my hair is extremely thick.

Watch what happens - I'll end up loving this product and wanting to purchase everything else in the hair care line. Of course that will happen because it's the single most expensive hair care product I've purchased in a long time. I try not to pay more than $25 for one product and this was $42. Go figure.

However, if it improves the condition of my hair - it's worth it --- right??? :-) According to the company, this product "has a one-of-a-kind quality that soaks into hair immediately, imparting long-lasting shine and conditioning advantages without any residue being left behind". Sounds good to me! Have you tried Moroccanoil? What is your favorite hair care line? Have a Terrific Tuesday!

The Dress You "Need" by Lilly Pulitzer

Happy Monday, Shopaholics!

Even though I'm technically not supposed to be shopping right now (trying to lose weight and all), I officially broke my resolve.

Meet the new Lilly Pulitzer Worth Shift Dress in Dark N Stormy ($178 retail). If you only buy one new Lilly dress from the Summer collection, this needs to be it. Seriously. I tried really hard to resist the pull of this one, and was successful for about a week.

The fit is amazing! The material is vintage slub cotton - part of the "Originals" line - and has a slight bit of give. There are pockets on the sides and the lace details make it really special.

Rumor has it they are producing a men's tie in the same print. If that comes to pass, I'll purchase it too as I think that would make a wonderful ensemble for a beach picture. The DH and I like to take one and have it later in the season as an option for our annual holiday card!

Dark 'N Stormy is already a huge hit - several of the stores have sold through an entire size run and have more on order. Don't delay if you want this one!

Have a Marvelous Monday and a great week!

Salt Water Saturday: Deep Sea Fishing

Happy Saturday!

Welcome to my first "Salt Water Saturday" post. All summer I will be bringing you lots of fun posts about how we are entertaining ourselves here on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Today we are going deep sea fishing, approximately 20-30 miles offshore. As you know, our fishing was cut extremely short last summer due to the BP oil spill. We feel like we have a lot of making up to do and plan to get started on it today! :-)

Last night we bait fished off the pier (live bait is always better than dead bait - although we have dead bait too), put gas in the boat (120 gallons - that hurt!), made lunches and iced down the drinks.

We had a satisfying dinner of royal reds, boiled corn, new potatoes and cold beer. Can't go fishing on an empty stomach, after all...

DH fishing for bait, Dauphin Island bridge in the background. He didn't even know I took this one!

Even I fished for bait - rest assured though, I was the only person around here wearing full jewelry, a Lilly skort, Lilly top and Jack Rogers sandals.

Now I'm working on a good night's sleep as 5am is really, really, really early. Here's hoping we have another photo to share like the one at the top of the post! It was taken last October when the fishing waters opened again after the oil spill.

Have a safe and fabulous weekend, and hope you enjoy Salt Water Saturday! Please let me know your thoughts!
