The Return of Dallas

So, my age (41) is really not a big secret around these parts, right? Pardon me while I actually show my age...

When I was young, Dallas was part of my family's Friday night ritual.  "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Dallas" were the shows to watch on Friday night; Saturday night was "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island". (Honestly - Dallas debuted in 1978, there weren't very many channels of television then anyway. And by the way, you had to get up off your tail to change the station, there were no remote controls. haha) My Father jokingly recalls a time when we were going out of town on a family vacation, but my Mother refused to leave the house until "Dallas" was over because it was the famous "Who Shot Jr?" episode. (We didn't have DVR's or DVD's back then either). If you missed an episode, you just missed it. You couldn't watch it online because frankly, Al Gore had not yet invented the internet either...haha! (Please don't hate on me, the Al Gore part is a joke, but seriously there was no internet then!)

When the original series ended in 1991, the story was old and a little tired. Brothers J.R. and Bobby Ewing had fought more times than we could count, their wives Sue Ellen and Pam had suffered more strife than one could possibly imagine, and the whole affair was just dated. The new "Dallas" will feature the original characters of J.R. Ewing, Bobby Ewing, and Sue Ellen Ewing (portrayed by original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray). There are new characters and the story line will center around J.R. and Bobby's sons, who will seemingly continue their father's bitter rivalry for power and control over Southfork, the family ranch.

Expect to see Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalf, Jordanna Brewster and Julie Gonzalo as the brothers and their love interests. Let the new nighttime soap opera begin! I'm very excited to see how the show will look, how the old characters have grown, and what their offspring are up to. It's going to be a fun ride!

Who else is looking forward to the debut of "Dallas" tonight on TNT at 8pm central? Can you believe I will be working when the show debuts??? Thank goodness that since 1978 - someone invented the internet, DVR and Hulu and the remote control!  I'll be able to catch it when I get home!

Will you be watching?

  1. That's so funny, Lori. I recognize two of the old Dallas actors bc one played the dad on Step By Step and the other was the guy on Bewitched. Thanks for the great explanation!
